Dario and Morelos had barely noticed the old wooden storage shed that sat about forty feet away from the trailer. Inside that shed, Dunn and Mills were making themselves at home. They had a portable heater that would supply at least a little warmth, and enough canned food and bottled water to last for days. Once Tanner took the bait and stepped into the trap, they would emerge and start blasting away at him. They had no idea that Dario Scallato was nearby, or that he had a deadly partner.
By the time Tanner arrived in the area, Dario and Morelosâs shoe prints had been covered up by the snow that had fallen, although he had noted their vehicle parked nearby. Tanner was dressed all in white, with several layers of clothing beneath the white parka he wore.
He ventured into the vacant lot as Dario and Morelos had done earlier and found a spot where he could keep watch over the travel trailer. He had no intention of going anywhere near it. He was there to watch and wait. As Romeo had said earlier, one way they had been trained to outwit a trap was by outwaiting the trappers.
Tanner pulled a roll of aluminum foil out of the left sleeve of his parka. After leaving sheets of the foil around the rear and sides of his position, he settled into a ruined old leather recliner. If someone approached him, they would step on the foil hidden beneath the snow and alert him to their presence.
The snow was coming down at a furious pace. It filled in the tracks he had made in no time. Within an hour, Tanner was coated by the frost. With his white attire, he blended in well with the scenery.
As Rubin and Al, the two homeless men, enjoyed the comfort, light, and warmth of the travel trailer, Dario, Morelos, along with Dunn and Mills were in dimly-lit spaces with little to no heat. As for Tanner, he sat out in the elements, as patient as any master predator. When his prey revealed themselves, he would be ready to strike.
Midnight came and went, and the snowfall continued unabated.
